Check your local newspaper’s classified advertising, the yellow pages or online antique dealer directories, to find an antique dealer near your home.  You may wish to phone in advance to see what the antique shop specializes in and if the antique dealer has the art deco cufflinks or Georgian sterling silver teapot that you’re looking to purchase.  If they don’t, they may help point you in the right direction as to where you may buy the antique that you’re seeking.  Or just drop in.  You may spy a Victorian oil painting that would fit perfectly over your couch.

Talk with the people working in the antique store.  In most cases, in particular smaller antique stores, the person that you find working there is the owner.  And almost always, the person has a passion for antiques and they love to talk about their passion.  Learn as much as possible.  Educate yourself about the antiques that you are seeking to acquire.  Not only will it help you make the correct decision as to how much to pay for your antique purchase, it will assist you in appreciating the history of your acquisition.

While you’re in the antique dealer’s store, see what books on collecting antiques that they may have.  Ask them which books that they would recommend on the area of antiques that you’re interested in.  Most of them will be very helpful for a knowledgeable customer will understand the true value of the antiques that the dealer is offering for sale.
